This course is an inquiry into children’s and young adult literature. Students will analyze works by diverse authors in multiple genres. Focus will be on critical reading of materials appropriate for the elementary through secondary grade levels.

This sophomore course is one of the preferred courses to transfer to major universities.

This Forms of Literature course focuses on African American literature and its contributions to American literature and culture, particularly its creation of new, enduring genres. Participants in this introductory course survey the rich and diverse history of African American literature which encompasses oral tradition, spirituals, signification, memoir, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and fiction. Reading, responding, writing, and class discussion are features of this course which fulfills the Language, Philosophy, and Culture foundational component area of the core, addressing Critical Thinking, Communication, Social Responsibility, and Personal Responsibility, and Teamwork.
